Ruthven Castle is better known as Ruthven Barracks, after the 18th century barrack block that was erected on top of the old castle mound. There is virtually nothing of the earlier buildings to be seen, just footings and a well, and the barracks itself is derelict, but open to the public at all times. There is a small car park adjacent, and the barracks is maintained by Historic Environment Scotland.

The mound was fortified by the Comyn Lords of Badenoch in the 13th century, and their castle repaired and occupied by Alexander Stewart, the Wold of Badenoch. This was updated by the Gordons in the latter 15th century, and kept in repair until the mid 17th century. In 1689 it was burned out by rebels and left in ruins before the site was cleared and the barracks built in 1718. This consists of two tall barrack blocks facing each other across a courtyard, with stables to the rear of a later date.
