Newcastle-upon-Tyne Castle Details

Newcastle upon Tyne Castle was founded in the 11th century on the site of a Roman fort, and refortified in stone in the 12th. It remained one of the principal royal fortresses in the north of England and was reworked many times. Parts of the caastle were demolished with teh railway construction, but the great keep of Henry II and the Black Gate remain as the principal survivors.
