Moncur Castle is a weakly situated tower house on low lying agricultural ground just to the west of Dundee. It is fenced off for safety reasons and heavily overgrown. Although the land was held by a family who took their name from it into the 16th century, in the end the male line failed and the estates of the family were broken up. Moncur itself passed to George Crichton, Bishop of Dunkeld in 1540.

It is likely therefore that the Z-plan tower house and a possible courtyard was erected for the bishops of Dunkeld, although the lands were part of the estate of Inchture, and both Moncur and Inchture castles are known in the late 16th century. As “Montcurr” was held by Montcurr of that Ilk on Pont’s map of c1600, it is possible that the two castles swapped names at some point. Either way, an accidental fire of 1691 burned this property down; it was never repaired.
