Lochwood Castle is a ruined castle of several periods dating back to perhaps the 12th century in part. It was occupied by the Johnston family, who may have started off as knights of the Bruce lords of Annandale. In fact it may well be that the castle was founded by the Bruces. The early castle was a motte and possible bailey on top of a ridge, and it is likely this was destroyed in the early 14th century.

After a period of abandonment, the site was reoccupied and a large L-shaped tower built towards the end of the 15th century. This was accompanied by a walled courtyard, and this complex occupies the possible bailey site. The courtyard was lined with buildings and suffered destruction events during the mid to late 16th century. It was restored and stayed in regular use to about 1705, being abandoned in 1773. It remains the property of Lord Annandale, now a Hope-Johnstone – and signs are up to state that there is no access.
