Llys Arthur, e/w of rectangular banked enclosure in fields of uncertain date, nature or origin

  • Closest To: Ponterwyd

Llys Arthur is a rectangular earthwork in a fairly wet agricultural field near the headwaters of the Afon Castell, a tributary of the Rheidol. It can be seen from the public road, and access would need to be with the permission of the farmer. The site has Roman-style curved corners, and is playing card shaped – on one side is an external ditch and upcast bank beyond. An entrance exists on the long NW side, and there may have been another, eroded away by water. The name first appears in the 18th century, but it is far from clear when it was built or occupied, or what its purpose was.
