Llantarnam Motte is a ditched motte that has been created by scarping and excavating a ditch round a natural promontory overlooking the Dowlais Brook, a stream which served the nearby Cistercian Abbey of Llantarnam, which is now a functioning convent. The motte is covered by trees and is part of a private garden, but can be seen from the roadside. It may have ceased to be in use if the lands here were granted to the abbey.
