Llanstephan Castle is a substantial ruined stone castle on a headland overlooking the Tywi Estuary, which was probably used for an Iron Age fort. It is maintained by Cadw as a visitor attraction, and is visible from public roads. The castle was founded as a D-shaped ringwork in the early 12th century, and the stone castle follows this plan, but with a polygonal inner courtyard occupying the SW corner. It remained in use into the 16th century, but was probably largely dilapidated well before then.
