Llanelli Castle is known to have existed by 1215, and is likely to have consisted of an earth and timber castle. A motte is shown on the earliest Ordnance Survey map, now mostly submerged in a reservoir, and more or less opposite the tidal limit of the Afon Lliedi. The castle is mentioned under the name of Carnwyllion several times in the 13th century, and may have been succeeded by a manorial centre elsewhere in the town, but if so it was of much less importance, and is conjectural.
