Llanegwad Castle, e/w of modest ditched motte on sloping site overlooking river valley

  • Closest To: Llanegwad
  • Access: Occasional Access
  • Grid Reference: SN516214

Llanegwad Castle is a ditched motte sitting on top of a ridge overlooking the village and parish church. The field is used for livestock, so permission should be gained from the farmer to access the site, and due to the contours of the land the mound cannot be seen from a public road. There are suggestions of a bailey extending to either side facing southwards in LIDAR, but this is not clear on the ground, and there is also masonry remnants on the summit of the motte, although too fragmentary to interpret.
