Llandovery Castle is a motte and bailey castle that is open as a public park. It dates to the early 12th century and was refortified in stone in the late 13th. The castle sits on the banks of the Afon Bran, a tributary of the Tywi, and was occupied for most of the period up to 1277 by the native Welsh. It remained in use into the 16th century, but was damaged in a fire and then used as a quarry for building materials.
