Llandaff Palace was the seat of the Bishops of Llandaff, and in the late 13th century Bishop Braose erected a small courtyard castle here. Tradition says that it was abandoned during the Glyndwr rebellion, but it was leased out in the mid 16th century, and the Speed map shows it as largely complete in 1610, with the great hall, mural towers and the twin-towered gatehouse. It was probably slighted in the Civil War, and only one mural tower survives, together with the gatehouse, some curtain wall, and part of the hall/solar block. It was acquired by the local authority in 1971 and is open to the public as a park.
