Laugharne Castle is a well-known stone courtyard castle which is maintained by Cadw as a tourist attraction, and is open to the public for a fee. Starting out as a 12th century ringwork, it was developed into an impressive stone castle by the de Brian family, and then into a Tudor mansion. It fell into disrepair by about 1600 and was slighted in teh Civil War, being left as a romantic ruin. It occupies a river promontory where the Coran joins the Taf, and looks out into the Tywi estuary.
