Ladys Mount Powis is an oval shaped ditched motte situated within the extensive grounds of Powis Castle, but not in areas that are generally open to the public. The motte and ditch are overgrown with vegetation and not easy to see on the ground, and LIDAR imagery shows that there is a banked bailey to the south-west of the motte. The history of tis castle is unknown, it may have replaced Domen Gastell to the north-east after that castle was attacked by Gruffudd ap Cynan ab Owain Gwynedd with an army from Gwynedd and England in 1196/7, and then retaken by Gwenwynwyn ap Owain Cyfeiliog the following year. Given the proximity of the site to the masonry castle, it is also possible this may have served as a siege castle erected by the princes of Gwynedd during one of their campaigns against Powis Castle, although this would be an unusual measure (Powis Castle was founded 1257). The grounds are part of the National Trust property, and permission should be sought if you wish to view the site.
