Knucklas Castle is the fragmentary remains of a 13th century stone courtyard castle which incorporated the remnants of an earlier earth and timber castle – itself utilising the remains of a hillfort. The castle is accessed by a public footpath, and what remains suggests a square courtyard with corner turrets or towers on the summit of the hill, perhaps with an outer courtyard. The castle was short lived, perhaps only being in use for 50 years before being abandoned – the lack of water seems an obvious weakness militarily. There is a community project intending to acquire and manage the site.
