Kindrochit Castle is a ruined stronghold of the kings of Scots which dates back to the 13th century, although this building was replaced by a tower house in the latter 14th century by the Drummond family. This reverted to the crown in 1435, and the castle appears to have fallen out of use, almost certainly being in ruins by 1565.

The original function of Kindrochit was a manorial centre of the earls of Mar, and the older parts of the ruins are those of a large hall-house which was may have been the place that Robert II signed a charter at in 1371. Mar fell to the crown in 1377, and Robert came here every August until his death in 1390 for hunting, so it seems likely that the castle was of royal build. The castle ruin has been stabilised and is now open to the public, with the Braemar public car park (and loos!) adjacent.
