Kidwelly Castle is a very well preserved but ruined stone castle built within the ditch of a riverside ringwork founded in the 12th century. It was repeatedly fought over during this period and into the mid 13th century, when it was held and strengthened by the Chaworth family. It is associated with a walled burgh, and is maintained by Cadw as a visitor attraction, so is open for a fee, and is clearly visible from public roads. The castle is built on a concentric D-plan and was probably completed to this plan for the earls of Lancaster. It was eventually abandoned in teh 16th century.
