Invercauld House is a large and highly visible castellated mansion just outside Braemar in Aberdeenshire. It is privately owned and not open to the public, although there are some estate footpaths in the area. The location is not strong, being on level haugh land, but strategically important as it is at the head of the Dee valley.

Invercauld was part of the earldom of Mar, and there are no early records relating to it. However in the 16th century it was held by the Farquharsson family, and hidden within the building are some very thick foundations indicative of a tower house of that period. 18th century sketches show more than one tower house at Invercauld, although they are not clear. The building was extended in 1679, and in 1715 had the earl of Mar in residence when he raised the standard of rebellion. Further 18th century developments were dwarfed by the 19th century work including the great square tower in the centre and baronial remodelling.
