Holywell Castle Mound Details
Holywell Castle Mound, e/w of ditched motte on tip of forested promontory site
- Closest To: Holywell
- Access: No Access
- Grid Reference: SJ186762
Holywell Castle Mound is described as a very heavily planted castle mound upon the promontory which overlooks St Winefride’s Well and Chapel, and St James’ Church. The site is certainly defensive, and a castle at Holywell is mentioned in the 12th century. However, the site has been extensively remodelled, has had housing built, and removed, from it, and the location is far from clear, as are the remains, making the site difficult to interpret.
