Holt Castle Details

Holt Castle, scant remains of once-impressive courtyard castle built on a plug of rock

  • Access: Free Public Access

Holt Castle is a very badly ruined castle that once capped and enclosed a rocky outcrop next to the River Dee. It is free to access at all times, and has in recent years been subject to sizeable works permitting the site to be accessed at all times. The castle consisted of a multangular courtyard with corner towers and a gatehouse, and the outcrop was contained within a revetting wall, the courtyard on the summit. Most of the recognisable parts of the castle have been removed after it was abandoned in the 17th century.
