Hen Gastell at Briton Ferry was an important fort used from the 6th century and later converted into a castle of sorts. Although categorised as a motte, this is not actually the case, as the castle was built on top of a knob of rock, the summit of which was levelled and a ditch excavated. Excavation before the site was destroyed by the construction of the M4 bridge revealed 12th and 13th century artefacts, confirming medieval use. The site is inaccessible to the public at all, although views can be had from the sailing club yard below the bridge.
