Hen Domen castle is a substantial and well-preserved motte and bailey with double banks and ditch defences erected in the 11th century at a strategically important for of the River Severn. The earthworks survive pretty much intact, but are in a field used for livestock so permission should be gained to access it. The castle was the forerunner of Montgomery Castle, and a fledgling burgh grew outside it of which nothing remains. It has been extensively excavated, and was abandoned in 1223.
