Hay Castle is a large and impressive ruined courtyard castle that is open to the public and undergoing stabilisation by a charitable trust. The castle occupies a mound overlooking the River Wye, and the town which lies in the angle of the confluence with the Dulais Brook. Parts of the building are clearly visible from the public roads, It dates originally to the 12th century, and the keep survives of this early castle, albeit incorporated into other buildings. Unusually, the Norman Gate-tower also survives.
