Hawarden Castle is open to the public one day a year, although the grounds surrounding it are a publicly accessible park. The castle was founded as a motte and bailey castle but massively rebuilt after it was destroyed in the Welsh Wars. In fact Hawarden was sacked by Dafydd ap Gruyffudd in 1283 which was the casus belli for Edward I to conquer Gwynedd. It was given extra earthworks in the Civil war and slighted afterwards, and has since suffered from landscaping measures.
