Haverfordwest Castle occupies a prominent rocky hill just outside the centre of the town. Substantial portions of the ruins remain, and it contains a museum with access to most of the ruin in return for a fee. The castle was substantially rebuilt in the 13th century for Queen Eleanor, and then granted out repeatedly to various barons. It remained in use until the Tudor period and was in ruins by 1577, but the site contained the county jail for centuries after.
