Harlech Castle is truly spectacular, and sits on a prominent rocky outcrop overlooking the Irish sea. It was primarily built for Edward I after his conquest of Wales in 1283, and remained in use as a royal fortress into the Tudor period, and was besieged in the Civil War, after which it was made indefensible, although it is mostly intact to the wallhead. It is maintained by Cadw and open as a tourist attraction for a fee, and it is clearly visible from public roads. It was traditionally the site of a princely llys, although little hints of this remain to be seen.
