Gwrych Castle is a 19th century castellated mansion built at the bottom of steep cliffs but on a level shelf looking towards the Irish Sea. It was built to a mock-medieval style to replace an Elizabethan mansion which had fallen into disrepair and was completed by 1825. The old house was called “Y From” which would imply a castle hill of some description, although this would be an unusual usage. It fell into disrepair in the 1980s and is now undergoing a lengthy restoration project, being owned by a charitable foundation. It was used as the venue for TV’s “I’m a Celebrity” during the pandemic.
