Grosmont Castle is an interesting ruined castle which is maintained by Cadw and open as a tourist attraction free of charge. The ruin is a stone courtyard with towers within an impressive castle ditch on a river cliff overlooking the River Monnow. This was founded in the late 11th century and then progressively improved with stone defences and buildings. It was an important castle of Hubert de Burgh and then granted to the earl of Lancaster, who remodelled the buildings again. It last saw action against Owain Glyndwr, and was in ruins by the mid 16th century.
