Foel-las Motte is described as a motte-type castle created by the scarping and development of a natural hilltop site overlooking headwaters which flow into the Afon Conwy to the west. Although it seems that the north-western side of the hill has been lost to erosion, the summit of the site is a kidney shaped level area, beneath which is a diamond-shaped terrace, and then a third terrace beneath. The hill is protected by the river to the north and east, and there may have been other wet areas to the west as well, now drained. This does not seem to follow the logic of a medieval motte particularly well to me.
