Flint Castle is a ruined keep and courtyard castle erected for Edward I on a promontory jutting into the Dee estuary in the first of his Welsh Wars. The most recognisable part of the castle is roughly square in plan, with round towers at each corner, and the largest – a round keep – in the south-east. This is separated from the rest of the castle by a ditch, which floods at high tide. The gatehouse to this was a rather basic structure with a drawbridge crossing the castle ditch. However there was also an outer courtyard, now without evidence of walls – and a planned borough in association with it. The castle is maintained by Cadw and open to the public free of charge.
