Fforest Wood Castle, e/w of ditched motte on ridge cutting off area to S serving as bailey

  • Closest To: Builth
  • Access: Occasional Access
  • Grid Reference: SO101529

Fforest Wood Castle is a ditched motte built adjacent to a gully on the north side of a large upland area and overlooking the headwaters of the Colwyn Brook and Afon Edw. It is overlooked by high ground to the south, but is well placed to watch over a watershed allowing access to the Wye Valley. A short distance away are the much larger Colwyn Castle and The Mount at Hundred House, and on the other side of the hill to the south is the motte and later castle at Aberedw – showing the strategic importance of the site.
