Erw'r Castell Caerwys, modest mound on sloped site ? Used as an earthwork castle or llys

  • Closest To: Caerwys
  • Access: Occasional Access
  • Grid Reference: SH578242

Erw’r Castell Caerwys is described as a mound in the centre of a field east of the village of Caerwys. However, examination of LIDAR reveals no feature matching the description at all, which is of a mound up to 2.5 metres high and 30 metres across. The grid reference given places the site north of the private road east of the town – but there is no feature showing on LIDAR at akll here. In fact it seems more likely that the location should be SH13237285, which is a natural contour line south of the road forming a kind of promontory. The name – Castle Acre in English – is clearly a field name, and the field to the south is about an acre in size. However there is no suggestion of a castle or motte here that I can see.
