  • Closest To: St Athan, Llancadle, East Aberthaw

East Orchard Castle is a medieval manorial complex on the edge of a river cliff, and whilst named as a castle, there is little evidence of fortification here. The various buildings are unenclosed, and include a chapel, doocot, and a great hall/house which was later converted into a barn. To the south is a pre-medieval double ditched enclosure visible as a cropmark, and to the west of St Athan is West Orchard Castle, indicating the history of this area is complex. The site is surrounded by agricultural fields, so permission to access will be required. It cannot be seen from any public roads.
