Duntrune Castle is a privately owned and occupied courtyard castle overlooking a sandy coastal bay, within which is a multiphase house largely of the 16th and 17th centuries. The castle was probably founded by the MacDougall family in the 13th century and passed to the Campbells during the Wars of Independence.

The Campbell family then maintained the castle into the mid 17th century, when it was probably sacked by Alasdair “Colkitto” who was at feud with the Campbells. The castle was repaired afterwards, but the estate fell into financial difficulty and was sold. In 1792 the MacCallum family from nearby Poltalloch purchased it – now known as the Malcolms, they restored the house in the 20th century. Today there is no access to the castle, but the gardens are open to the public.
