Domen Gastell Welshpool is a large motte and bailey castle within the modern town of Welshpool. The motte is adjacent to the main road and clearly visible, though overgrown, and accessible to the public. The bailey, protected with a bank, is used as the bowls club and is not accessible except to members. It is likely this was the original castle of Pool that was occupied by the Welsh lords of Powys prior to the establishment of Powis Castle, and around which they founded the borough of Pool.
