Dixton Motte Details

Dixton Motte, e/w of low ditched mound, both irregularly shaped. Probable moated manorial site

  • Closest To: Dixton, Monmouth
  • Access: Occasional Access
  • Grid Reference: SO518137

Dixton Motte is a modest moated site which consists of a roughly rectangular mound surrounded by an irregular ditch, probably kept boggy by the adjacent stream. To the south is the parish church. The site is on agricultural ground, and although the field is adjacent to public roads, natural ground levels make the site hard to see. There is no evidence of masonry, and, given the lack of natural defence and close proximity of the castle of Monmouth, it is likely this was predominantly a manorial site rather than defensive.
