Dinas Emrys Castle has a long and complex history, and is most famous for being the site in Arthurian myth where the young Merlin saved his own life by foretelling the fall of Vortigern through prophecy of the red dragon being victorious over the white – and telling the king an underground lake undermined his fort building. However, in terms of a castle, what survives is the footings of a rectangular tower-keep, believed to be 13th century, and a wall around the hilltop, the approach protected by two more arcs of walling. It is possible for the public to access, but a hard climb.
