Cwrt-y-Gaer is a sub-circular earthwork on the south-facing side of a ridge. Consisting of a well-defined ditch except to the north-east, there is no clear bank apart from on the interior at the western end. The interior is now occupied by a farmhouse, which may have involved the destruction of the missing part of the earthwork. A short distance away is the church of St Thomas, and the whole area is set within a wide bowl of land containing a river system draining into the Usk. Given the size, location, and nature of the earthwork, this may predate the medieval period.
