Criccieth Castle is a ruined 13th century castle built by the princes of Gwynedd and then strengthened by Edward I of England. Consisting of an inner courtyard with twin towered gatehouse, and an irregular outer courtyard provided with two rectangular towers by the time of the Edwardian conquest, the English king heightened the gatehouse and added a third rectangular tower on the sea-side of the inner courtyard. The castle is built on top of a prominent rocky outcrop and is clearly visible from the public roads and beach. It is managed by Cadw as a tourist attraction and is open for a fee to the public.
