Conwy Castle is one of the finest ruined castles in the country, and is open to the public for a fee. Consisting of two massively towered courtyards on top of a crag overlooking the River Conwy, it was founded by Edward I of England after his conquest of Wales. Like Caernarfon and elsewhere, a new bastide-type walled town was also founded here, displacing the monastery of Aberconwy and incorporating an old hall/tower of the princes of Gwynedd into the walls.
