Colwyn Castle is an impressive ditched ringwork set within a rectangular earthwork reminiscent of a Roman fort. The ringwork is occupied by a modern house and farm buildings, which can also be seen in the bailey area. Any access is therefore strictly by arrangement. The scale of the earthworks is visible from the public road though. The castle was founded in the mid 12th century and remained in use by English and Welsh for long afterwards. A stone castle, of which nothing remains, was built on the site in the mid 13th century, which was demolished in 1629.
