Chirk Castle is a large and impressive courtyard castle built for Roger Mortimer in the late 13th century. It is now run as a tourist attraction by the National Trust, so there is chargeable public access. The castle was planned to be roughly square in plan, with round corner towers, and D-shaped towers midway along each side, but was never completed to the original design, and was much altered in the 17th century.
