Chepstow Castle is a large and impressive stone castle operated as a visitor attraction by Cadw. It sits at the top of a river-cliff overlooking the River Wye, and has two large wards separated by a Norman tower-keep, defended with mural towers and a great ditch. Within are significant domestic buildings including an Elizabethan residence. The castle was founded at the instruction of William the Conqueror, and became one of the principal castles of the Marshal and Clare earls of Pembroke. It then came to the Earls of Norfolk until 1468, and was then remodelled by the Earls of Worcester. It remained in use into the Civil war period, was partly dismantled in the 1680s, and has been a tourist draw since the 18th century.
