Cefn Bryntalch Castle, earthworks of ringwork and bailey castle occupying prominent riverside ridge

  • Closest To: Llandyssil, Montgomery
  • Access: Occasional Access
  • Grid Reference: SO175963

Cefn Bryntalch Castle occupies a prominent ridge overlooking the River Severn a short distance north of Abermule. It is clearly there to watch over the river, and is not far from the important English castle of Montgomery. The castle earthworks are well-preserved. Cut partway up the slope and enclosing the whole site is a ditch and bank, reduced to a terrace in places. Above this are two enclosures, each provided with a substantial bank around the edge, with the slightly smaller inner enclosure being higher up, and to the NE. Access seems to have been from the SW to both enclosures. The site is adjacent to Cefn Bryntalch Hall, a private residence, and permission should be gained to access the castle.
