Castle Hill Hyssington is a ditched motte with possible remnants of a bailey on a prominent hill adjacent to St Ethelreda’s church. The motte had a shell keep of sorts on the summit, and traces of other buildings have been found elsewhere on the little hilltop, including a possible tower towards the south-eastern end of the hill which is where the entrance to the site was. A bank and ditch runs around the base of the hill, and it has been suggested this was an English thegnly site in origin. The land seems to be within a private garden, although this is not clear, so permission should be sought if intending to access it.
