Castle Caereinion is a village that contains what is believed to be a castle motte within the bounds of the village churchyard. There are suggestions that the motte was ditched, and that the raised levels of the churchyard actually represent the lines of a lost bailey. The mound can be seen from the churchyard and from the public road. The site is of strategic importance, occupying a watershed saddle not far from the principal castle of the Welsh princes of Powys at Welshpool, overlooking the main route west.
