Castell-y-Bere is a large and impressive ruined castle erected for the princes of Gwynedd in the 13th century on top of a rocky crag overlooking the Afon Dysynni. It is open to the public and free to access, but the lanes are narrow and parking limited. The castle has two courtyards separated by a rocky ditch, each of which has a D-shaped tower-keep, and between the two is a third, which is rectangular. With multiple gates, this is easily the most ambitious castle of the native Welsh we know, but it was abandoned and burned out in 1294.
