Castell Meredydd, or Machen Castle, is a small and badly ruined stone castle erected by the native Welsh princes of Gwynllwg in the late 12th / early 13th century. The castle consisted of a tower-keep on a rocky outcrop at the end of a ridge with a walled outer enclosure. On a second outcrop was a rectangular hall-type building. Today the site appears to be within the boundaries of an occupied property, although this is not clear, and nearby is the massive Machen Quarry. It is sadly dilapidated and in dire need of consolidation.
