Castell Mawr Llanwinio is a large fortified promontory site consisting of an outer an inner enclosure overlooking the confluence of two minor rivers. The outer enclosure is defended by a curved rampart with external ditch, and within this at the point of the promontory is a raised roughly triangular area with an external ditch. Although it is likely to have been a pre-medieval fort in origin, the topography is consistent with reuse as a motte and bailey castle. To reach the site it is necessary to cross fields used for agriculture, so permission should be sought from the farmer in order to see it as it is invisible from public roads.
