Castell Maelgwn
Castell Maelgwn Details
Castell Maelgwn aka Bryn Castell, quadrangular motte by river crossing believed to be llys
- Closest To: Caerhun
- Access: Occasional Access
- Grid Reference: SH785719
Castell Maelgwn is a modest sized motte which overlooks the modern Tal-y-Cafn road bridge across the River Conwy and was an important crossing point in medieval times, at one point being provided with a ferry. Toll collection from the crossing is the most likely reason for the mound, which probably had little military function, although it may have been the site of a llys. The site is covered by trees and there is no obvious way to access it.
