Castell Gwallter is a large and impressive ditched motte with remnants of two baileys, the larger of which is suspiciously playing card-shaped suggesting an earlier Roman usage. It sits on high ground overlooking a pass between two minor river valleys. The ground is used for agriculture and there are no public footpaths, meaning that permission should be gained in order to access the site. It is seemingly named after Walter Marshal, who was earl of Pembroke in the early 13th century.
